LIVING FOR THE KINGDOM IN OUR WORLD
LIVING FOR THE KINGDOM IN OUR WORLD
Everything we do to grow our faith is meant to prepare us for the moment we step back out into the world. Our faith was never meant to be kept within the four walls of a church building.
Jesus gave us a beautiful picture of our purpose in the world. He said it calls believers to be "salt and light" (Matthew 5:13-16). I love these simple images because they’re so practical.
Think about salt. Salt brings out the best flavors and preserves what is good. In the same way, our presence in our workplaces and communities should make life better, preserving what is good and just, and adding a flavor of grace and hope that makes people thirsty for something more.
And then there's light. Light cuts through darkness and helps people see things clearly. It provides warmth and safety. Our job is to be a light in a world that can often feel dark and confusing, pointing people toward the truth and hope of Jesus, not by being preachy, but by living lives of integrity and love.
Being salt and light makes us agents of positive transformation in their workplaces, neighborhoods, and society at large. Our mission field isn't some faraway country; it's the desk where you work, the cul-de-sac where you live, and the checkout line at the grocery store.
So what does this actually look like day-to-day?
For one, this includes advocating for justice. It can be as simple as standing up for a coworker being treated unfairly, or as involved as supporting local efforts that make your community safer and more fair for everyone. It’s about using our voices to speak up for what is right, especially for those who have no voice.
It also means caring for the poor and marginalized. This is where our faith gets hands and feet. It’s volunteering at a soup kitchen, befriending a lonely neighbor, or looking for ways to help those who are struggling. It’s about seeing people through the compassionate eyes of Jesus and then acting on that compassion.
And woven through all of this is the joy of sharing the good news of the gospel. As we live this way, people will notice. Our actions of love, compassion, and justice naturally open the door for conversations. They create a curiosity about the hope that drives us, and we get the incredible privilege of telling them that our hope has a name: Jesus.
Living for the Kingdom in the world isn't about having all the answers or being perfect. It’s about being a little bit of salt and a little bit of light, right where God has planted you, and trusting that He will use your simple, faithful life to do extraordinary things.
To help you on this journey, we have curated a collection of resources designed to explore these very topics on a personal level. These can be found in the Outreach sections of the site.
